Broadbent Madeira 5 Year Reserve, NV, 750ml
The history of Madeira wine starts with the Age of Exploration. Madeira was a frequent port of call for ships whose captains would stock up on wine that had been fortified to prevent spoilage for their trans-Atlantic voyages. The blazing tropical heat that penetrated the barrels during the voyages changed the flavor of the otherwise light and acidic wine into soft, deep flavored, and pleasantly oxidized wines. This is Tinta Negra, a red grape and the most planted on the island.
Dark in color, and sweet, this is full, rich and satisfying, with burnt caramel and smoke notes. The sweetness is balanced by vibrant acidity, ending on a clean, almost salty tang. Drink now.
