It’s planted to all of Syrah’s genetic relations on both the Italian and French side of the Alps including Mondeuse, Teroldego, Lagrein and Viognier as it reaches back to what a wine from the Alps might have been like in the 1800’s. We do this by starting with modern Cote Rotie and imagining how comparable wines might have existed across the alpine areas of Europe in the past. The inclusion of these other varieties in tandem with the Alpine\u003cbr\u003eposition of our site renders the flavors we normally associate with Syrah in an uncommonly delicate and perfumed way.\u003cbr\u003eThat said, the 2023 is the most dense and powerful release yet from the parcel and should eventually rival the 2018 in terms of breadth (that wine has become a wonder of truffle and spice). This is a parcel where we’ve been pushing for more ripeness in recent years. The Teroldego and Mondeuse hold the wine back from becoming overripe and over time we’ve realized that we can push the wines further than we realized without giving up lift and refinement. Instead it has brought grace with amplitude and an almost cloud-like quality to the textures. This wine has proved particularly well suited to this\u003cbr\u003eapproach and as with the greatest Cote Rotie’s you can achieve a high degree of hedonism without giving up the wines underlying delicacy.\u003cbr\u003eAlong with Avellana this is the most peppery and spicy of the wines. These perfumes (Rotundone based) function as a container for the wild essences of the site.
