Franck Besson made his reputation in Beaujolais with sparkling wines that he crafts from Gamay growing at high elevation, but this tiny production Julienas shows he’s plenty adept at making traditional wines from a famous cru, too. ‘Le Grottier,’ meaning “sour cherry tree,” comes from fifty-year-old organically farmed vines. Fruit is harvested by hand, fermented via carbonic maceration, and bottled with no added sulfur after spending 9 to 12 months on the lees in stainless steel tank. This exceptionally pure and fruity wine features cherry, raspberry, and subtle aromas of white pepper and violets.
