The Massa Vineyard (née Durney) grows on a 1300 ft elevation, northwest-facing bench in the Cachagua region of Carmel Valley, approximately 20 miles inland from Carmel Bay. The vineyard was first planted in 1968. The Chenin Blanc dates from 1970 and is planted on its own roots in granitic loam. The vineyard was dry-farmed for its first fifty years and was transitioned to organic farming in 1994. Only 3 acres of this Chenin Blanc exist and it has become one of the most sought-after blocks in Monterey County. Mountain-grown old vine Chenin Blanc like this only exists in a few tiny blocks in California and the Massa Chenin produces wines of unmatched verve and intensity.
